Your questions, answered: Laser Hair Removal

How does laser hair removal work?

Laser hair removal (LHR) is a permanent hair reduction method where a laser emits safe and effective energy deep into the hair follicles. As these follicles heat up, their natural growth cycle is impacted. Over a series of sessions, hair stops growing almost completely.

Does it hurt?

While it’s normal to feel some slight discomfort, we think it hurts much less than most other forms of hair removal, particularly waxing. Many describe the sensation similar to the snap of a tiny rubber band and the treatment itself is rather quick – most areas only take 5-10 minutes in total. To further minimize any discomfort, our machine is equipped with a cooling cryogen feature that eases the sting immediately after each laser pulse.

Is laser hair removal safe for all skin tones?

Short answer, yes! Once upon a time, lasers were only able to differentiate the hair follicle if there was a dramatic difference between the hair and the skin, making LHR off limits to those with darker complexions. Thankfully, modern technology doesn’t discriminate. At santāl skin, we have invested in the safest and most effective laser so we can all be hair-free.

Am I a candidate?

For laser hair removal to work, the laser relies on a contrast between your hair follicle and skin tone. The laser looks for darker hair follicles so if your hair is naturally very light, the laser isn’t able to distinguish it. Unfortunately, this makes laser hair removal very difficult for blonde hair.

How many treatments will I need?

In general, plan between 6-12 treatments. In some areas where hair growth is hormonally driven (e.g. the bikini/brazilian or facial hair), more sessions might be required and usually fall closer to 8-12 for full permanent hair reduction. Since the number of treatments varies person to person, we price our sessions individually and always assess where your results are prior to treatment. When you’ve reached total smoothness, we recommend a yearly maintenance treatment to stay hair-free.

Can I shave between laser hair removal appointments?

Yes! In fact, we require you that you shave your treatment area 24 hours before your appointment. After your treatment, wait 2-3 days before shaving again (if you even need to!).

How do I maintain results?

We recommend coming in for a yearly touch-up or anytime you notice regrowth. Hair growth in many areas is hormone-driven so any kind of hormonal changes, particularly pregnancy or menopause, may stimulate regrowth.

After your appointment

The great thing about laser hair removal is there’s little downtime and aftercare is minimal. Following your appointment, the most important thing to do is to protect your skin from the sun – wear a high quality SPF or protective clothing . If you’re treating an area like the underarms, avoid deodorants for 1-2 days after as well.
